History of Bobcat® Equipment

The company traces its history back to 1947 when E.G. Melroe launched the Melroe Manufacturing Company. He also invented the Melroe pickup and the harroweeder. When he died in 1955, his sons became the company's leaders and expanded further into the farm implement market.

In 1958, the brothers met inventors Cyril and Louis Keller. These individuals repaired farm equipment. One day, they chatted with a customer about how hard it was to clean the second story of his turkey barn. The Kellers created a front-end loader with two drive wheels and a rear caster wheel. This invention saw success at the Minnesota State Fair and earned them employment by Melroe.

In 1962, the company unveiled the M440, which was the first loader to have the name “Bobcat”. Other pieces of equipment followed and sported names such as “Big Bob” or “Mini-Bob”. The name Bobcat began to stick. In 2000, the company changed its name to Bobcat Company. They also began manufacturing telehandlers, load backhoes, utility vehicles, and light construction products.
